RISERVA STORICA PROJECT

The project in brief: description and context

The Project. Riserva Storica Panizzi – Ten Years After., features Vernaccia Riserva, which is being reintroduced to the market 10 years after its birth.

The idea was born more than 10 years ago, when the winery began reserving 10 percent of this label’s production for the long term, with the goal of creating a “library” of old vintages, intended exclusively for catering.

For us, the Historic Reserve Project means carrying forward the certainty that Vernaccia is a wine that makes the passage of years its strength and energy and that it might even outlive us, those who gave it life.

Precise and pioneering conviction

The inspiration came from Simone Niccolai, who succeeded Giovanni Panizzi as owner of the winery and who, from him, inherited the love and an innovative approach to Vernaccia. Niccolai says, “I was born and raised in San Gimignano, this is my land. With Panizzi, I had the opportunity not only to demonstrate the quality of the grape variety with vintage wine; but also to imagine it on par with the great white grape varieties that defy time. Therefore, in 2011 I decided to set aside a significant number of bottles of Riserva.”

10 Years After

The project saw its first realization in 2021, when Vernaccia Riserva Storica 10 Years After 2011 was presented. In 2024, we presented the 2014 Riserva Storica, with an event intended to be a long-awaited and special annual event for our loyal customers. Panizzi will offer the Riserva Storica 10 Years After edition every new year.

Time - Awareness - Commitment

Time and commitment the core values

The time is the central factor of the Riserva Storica project that makes Vernaccia Riserva the witness of a vintage and its evolution. It brings to the present day traces of our territory’s history and human actions. For this reason, the project is much more than a challenge with time or the desire to demonstrate the longevity of this extraordinary grape variety, a characteristic that Vernaccia di San Gimignano has already cleared and well communicated, establishing itself as one of the great Italian white wines that do not fear the years.

Rather, the idea of the Historical Reserve arose from the awareness of Panizzi that after 10 years of maturation and refinement the product has grown, if not made better by time.

This project is for us first and foremost commitment.

Beyond time

Growth and experience for us and to share

The project is a means for us to measure ourselves against the greatness of this grape variety and seek confirmation of Giovanni Panizzi’s revolutionary intuition. To build a library wine is a source of knowledge and growth for us, as it always allows us to acquire new information about wines and how they develop over time, helping to refine our work.

We like to think of the concept of Historical Reserve as something broader, something that goes beyond the wine in question and can be a source of experience and wealth for future generations. May our work represent a legacy for the denomination and for the entire community of San Gimignano.
